When something in your home stops working, you should not have to work out who to trust with it. Sears Home Services has been sending technicians into other people's kitchens since 1956, and two things have stayed constant the whole way through: the person who tests your appliance is the person who repairs it, and the number quoted at your kitchen table is the number printed on your invoice.

Repair services

Our technicians repair kitchen and laundry appliances in the room they already stand in, on the twenty-four manufacturers listed on this site, and they hold the EPA certification that sealed system work legally requires. One price covers the part and the labor together, it is agreed with you before anything is taken apart, and thirty days on our labor is written onto the invoice you are handed.

How a visit works

A technician arrives inside the two hour window you were given, carrying the parts that most often wear out on your model, and places protective covers down before stepping onto your floor. The appliance is then read rather than guessed at: live readings, the error history the machine has been keeping about itself, and a meter on whatever circuit that history points to. When the readings are in, you are told what happened in language that makes sense, and given one price. Only after you have said yes does anything come apart.

What four climates teach you

Manuals describe how an appliance is supposed to behave. They are silent on everything that decides how long one lasts in a particular house. A condenser coil a mile from the Pacific in Manhattan Beach, or a block off the ocean in Sunny Isles Beach, collects salt as well as kitchen grease, and the two together hold heat exactly where the coil is trying to lose it. Water in the Chicago collar puts a shell on a dishwasher heating element and an ice maker plate inside five years, so the machine in Skokie that has stopped drying is very often not a broken machine at all. An indoor rated freezer standing in an Aurora garage looks as though it is dying every January and behaves perfectly again in April. A dryer duct in a Yonkers row house runs three times the length the manufacturer drew, and that is why the clothes come out damp.

What we will tell you plainly

When a repair would cost more than half a comparable new machine and the appliance has already used up two thirds of its years, we recommend replacing it and show the arithmetic. Losing that job costs us less than the reputation of having sold the part. Where a manufacturer number has gone out of production, we say so and explain why the equivalent is the better or the only choice.
