Every ice machine and every ice maker is a water appliance first. Mineral content decides how often the plate scales, the filter decides what reaches it, and pressure decides whether the fill is complete before the cycle starts.

A freezer that will not get below fifteen degrees
Start at the coil. A condenser matted with dust cannot lose heat, so the compressor runs continuously and never reaches temperature. Where the coil is clean, the door seal and the sensor come next, and the sealed system last of all.
Ice production has slowed to a trickle
A standalone ice machine that has slowed is usually scaled rather than broken. The evaporator plate builds a mineral layer that insulates it from the water it is trying to freeze, and output falls off long before anything stops working.
Cubes coming out cloudy, small or hollow
That is a water problem, not a refrigeration one. Flow rate, the filter and the water temperature arriving at the machine all change cube quality, and all three are checked before anything is opened up.
A chest freezer that has iced over completely
Manual defrost cabinets are supposed to be cleared periodically, and a heavy ice layer is normal wear rather than a breakdown. Where ice returns quickly after a defrost, the seal or the lid alignment is letting warm air in.
The machine runs but the bin never fills
On an ice machine the harvest cycle is a separate mechanism from the freeze cycle, and it can fail on its own. The plate freezes correctly and then never releases. It is a specific, readable condition and not a reason to replace a working machine.
Water pooling under a standalone ice machine
The drain, the pump or the bin seal. These machines make water as a matter of course and depend entirely on getting rid of it, so a blocked drain shows up on the floor rather than inside the cabinet.

How often does an ice machine need cleaning?
Every six months for a household machine, and quarterly where the water is hard. This is maintenance rather than repair, and it is the whole difference between a machine that lasts a decade and one that limps along at half output for three years before somebody replaces it unnecessarily.
The ice has started tasting of the freezer. Why?
Ice absorbs whatever is in the air around it, and a door seal letting warm air in, or an old filter, will both do it. Neither is a breakdown. Replacing the filter and checking the seal deals with it, and the taste goes within a couple of batches.
Can a freezer live in an unheated garage?
Only if it is rated for it. An indoor freezer standing in a garage through an Aurora or Downers Grove January frequently stops calling for cooling altogether, because its thermostat reads the room rather than the cabinet. The contents thaw while the room is freezing. It looks exactly like a broken appliance and it is not, and fitting parts will not change it.
