Compressor and thermoelectric cabinets age differently
A compressor cabinet has the same repertoire of problems as any small refrigerator and is repairable at almost any age. A thermoelectric cabinet has modules that lose efficiency gradually until the appliance can no longer reach its setpoint in a warm room.
That difference decides the advice. On the first, we quote a repair. On the second, past a certain age, the honest answer is that it will not get better and we say so.
Built-in cabinets and the ventilation somebody blocked
Undercounter and integrated wine cabinets are designed to exhaust heat through a specific grille, and joinery changes over the years have a habit of sealing it. We check the airflow path before opening anything up.
Where that is the whole answer, the invoice is small and the cabinet lasts years longer. It is one of the more satisfying visits in this trade.
What matters when the cabinet holds something valuable
Stability matters more than the exact number. A cabinet sitting two degrees off but rock steady is doing its job; one swinging six degrees either side of the correct setting is not, even though the display looks right.
So we log a full cycle rather than reading the panel and leaving. It takes longer and it is the only way to know what the cabinet is actually doing.

The cabinet will not hold its set temperature
First question is which cooling technology you have. A compressor cabinet behaves like a small refrigerator and is repaired like one. A thermoelectric cabinet has no compressor at all, and when its modules age it simply stops being able to reach the number on the display. Telling those apart decides whether this is a repair or a replacement conversation.
One zone is right and the other is not
On a dual zone cabinet each zone has its own sensor, its own damper or its own module. One zone drifting while the other holds is normal behaviour for a part that has gone, not a sign the whole appliance is finished.
Condensation forming inside the glass door
The door seal or the heated glass circuit. Wine cabinets run cold behind a large glass panel in a warm room, which is exactly the condition that makes condensation, and the appliance has a specific defence against it that can stop working.
The cabinet runs constantly and never rests
Wine cabinets are frequently built into joinery with a ventilation gap somebody has since blocked. Before anything is condemned we check that the appliance can actually breathe, because a cabinet suffocating in a cupboard produces exactly this complaint.
The interior light stays on and warms the cabinet
A door switch that no longer registers the door closing. Cheap part, and worth doing quickly, because a lamp running continuously inside an insulated cabinet is a real heat load fighting a small compressor.
Vibration you can feel through the bottles
Wine cabinets are built to isolate vibration and the mounts that do it perish. Beyond the noise, this is the one thing on this page with a direct effect on what is stored, which is why owners tend to want it dealt with promptly.

What should a wine cabinet actually be holding?
Somewhere between fifty and fifty five degrees for long term storage, but stability matters more than the exact figure. A cabinet sitting two degrees off and rock steady is doing its job properly. One swinging six degrees either side of a perfect setting is not, even though the display looks right, and that is why we log a full cycle rather than reading the panel and leaving.
Can a freestanding cooler be built into cabinetry?
Not safely. A freestanding cabinet exhausts heat out of its back and sides, and enclosing it means it is breathing its own warm air. It will run permanently, hold badly and die early. Built-in models vent forward through a grille for exactly this reason, and it is worth the difference in price.
Is a thermoelectric cooler worth repairing?
Frequently not, and we will tell you before you spend anything. Thermoelectric modules lose efficiency gradually rather than failing outright, so an older cabinet simply stops being able to reach its setpoint in a warm room. Nothing is broken and nothing can be replaced to fix it. A compressor cabinet is a different answer entirely and is usually well worth repairing.
