Everything about a compactor is arranged so that a very strong ram cannot move while a person could reach it. That means several switches in series and a key, and it means a single failed switch stops the whole machine.
We test that chain in order rather than bypassing it to see what happens. Anybody who suggests otherwise should not be working on this appliance.

Most compactors are built into a run of units and have to come out to be worked on. Getting one out and back without marking the surrounding doors takes time, and that time is in the appointment.

Nothing happens when the key is turned
Almost always a safety switch rather than the motor. The drawer switch, the top interlock and the key switch are wired in series precisely so that the ram cannot move with the drawer open, and any one of them failing stops everything. They are inexpensive and they are the first things we read.
The ram stops partway down and stays there
An overload has tripped, a drive screw has picked up debris, or the gearbox is slipping. There is a manual return on most models, and forcing the ram is the one thing that turns a modest repair into an expensive one.
A grinding noise on the down stroke
The drive nut or the screw threads are worn. On this appliance that is a genuine mechanical repair rather than a part swap, and it is worth doing, because a compactor is otherwise a very long lived machine.
The drawer will not close properly
Rollers and the track, ninety times in a hundred. Compactor drawers carry real weight and the rollers wear flats on themselves. It is a cheap repair and an obvious one once the drawer is out.
A persistent smell even after emptying
The charcoal filter and the drawer seal are consumables and both have a service life. Where the smell persists after both are replaced, something has usually got past the bag and into the cabinet, and that is a cleaning job we will do rather than describe.
The compactor runs but barely compresses
The ram is not reaching full travel, which points at the limit switch, the drive or a bag that is jamming the stroke. This machine has one very strong motor and a simple job, so a compactor that is not compressing is usually being stopped by something rather than failing.

Can you still get parts for an older compactor?
Yes, and more readily than owners expect. Switches, rollers, drive nuts and ram components are all still supplied for units well over a decade old. A compactor is mechanically simple and long lived, which is exactly why repairing one is nearly always the right call.
Is a compactor still worth having?
Where somebody uses it, absolutely. It cuts the volume of household waste by a serious margin and there is very little in it to go wrong. Where one has sat unused for years, we will say honestly that the repair may not earn its money back, and that is your call rather than ours.
How often does the filter need changing?
Every six months or so, and the drawer seal roughly annually. Both are consumables rather than breakdowns. Where a smell persists after both are replaced, something has usually escaped the bag and got into the cabinet, and that is a cleaning job we will do rather than describe to you.
