Front load and top load are different machines
A front loader is a sealed drum on suspension with a door lock the whole cycle depends on. A top loader is an open tub with a lid switch, a coupler and often a mechanical transmission. The parts that give out, and the order in which they give out, have almost nothing in common.
So the model number matters here more than on most appliances, and it is the first thing we ask for, because it determines which parts the technician brings.
Stacked and cupboard installations
A washer stacked under a dryer, or built into a cupboard, has to come out before anything below the drum can be reached. That is a two person job on some models and the appointment is booked accordingly rather than discovered halfway through.
Where the machines are stacked, we check the dryer while everything is apart, because the second visit costs you more than the ten minutes it takes.
Detergent, and why it turns into a repair
Modern machines use a fraction of the water older ones did, and the same scoop of powder that worked in 1995 now leaves residue in the drum, the dispenser and the drain path. That residue is behind a real share of the smells, the leaks and the sensor errors we are called out to.
When we find it, we say so and show you, because the alternative is you paying for a part that was never the problem.

The drum will not spin and the load sits soaking
On a front loader the door lock assembly is the part we replace most often. The machine reads an unlocked door as a reason never to spin, and it is right to. On a top loader the same complaint is usually the lid switch or a worn drive coupler. Neither is expensive; both are frequently mistaken for a dead motor.
Water still in the drum at the end of the cycle
Pull the filter first. Coins, hair grips and small change stop a drain pump dead, and that is what we find on roughly half of these calls. Where the filter is clear, the pump itself or the pressure sensor telling the machine how full it is comes next.
The machine walks across the floor on spin
Either the load is genuinely unbalanced or the suspension has given up. Shock absorbers and drum springs wear out quietly over years, and the machine compensates until it cannot. Left alone, a walking machine eventually damages its own bearings, which is a much larger repair.
A grinding or rumbling noise that gets worse each week
That is usually the drum bearing. It is the one repair on a washing machine where we will often recommend against going ahead, because the labor involved is considerable and on many models the bearing is pressed into the drum rather than sold separately. You get the arithmetic and you decide.
Water on the floor only during the wash
On a front loader, look at the door boot. It catches everything that comes out of a pocket, and a small tear leaks only when the water is being thrown outward hard enough to find it. Standing water does not reach the gap, which is why the machine looks fine between cycles.
A cycle that keeps stopping and restarting
The machine is trying to balance a load it cannot balance, or a sensor is giving it a number it does not believe. Both are readable. Neither means the appliance is beyond help, and a control board should be the last thing anybody suggests rather than the first.

washer questions we are asked
Are front loaders more trouble than top loaders?
They are different trouble rather than more of it. Front loaders use less water and spin faster, which is harder on bearings and on the door boot, and they will refuse to spin rather than walk across the floor. Top loaders are simpler and have a transmission and a coupler to give out instead. Neither is inherently worse; they simply hand you a different repair when the time comes.
Nine years old and it needs bearings. Is that worth doing?
Usually not, and this is the one repair where we say so most often. The labor is heavy, and on a great many models the bearing is pressed into the drum rather than sold on its own, so the part is most of a new machine. The exception is a Miele or an Asko, where the rest of the appliance genuinely has another decade in it. You get the arithmetic either way.
Ours is stacked inside a closet. Can you still work on it?
Yes, and the appointment is booked knowing that. A stacked pair has to come apart before anything under the washer drum can be reached, which on some models is a two person job. While everything is out we look at the dryer as well, because a second visit costs you far more than the ten minutes that takes.
