What gets checked, and in what order
Readings come off the vents, not the display. A panel reporting thirty eight degrees while the shelf sits at forty five has already told us the sensor is the problem and nothing else is. After that it is the airflow path, then the defrost circuit, then the door seal, and only when all three are clear does anyone start talking about refrigerant.
That order is a money decision as much as a technical one. A blocked drain and a dead compressor produce word for word the same complaint from the owner and are several hundred dollars apart. Working from the outside in is what separates them without spending your money to find out.
Where the cost usually lands
On most cabinets the answer is inexpensive: an evaporator fan, a defrost heater, a sensor, a door gasket gone hard. Our technicians carry all four of these parts with them. Sealed system work is the expensive end of this trade and also the rarest, which is exactly why nobody should start there.
When a sealed system repair genuinely is the answer, you get the number alongside what a comparable replacement costs, and you decide. On a cabinet already two thirds of the way through its working life, that conversation usually ends with us telling you not to spend the money.
Columns, integrated cabinets and panel ready doors
Built-in refrigeration is a different appointment and is booked as one. The unit has to come out of joinery built to the millimeter without leaving a mark, the door panel has to come off and go back aligned, and the water line has to be isolated before any of that starts.
On a two compartment column each side runs as its own sealed system, so one side going warm while the other holds perfectly is the design working rather than half the appliance dying. Owners are usually relieved to hear it, and it changes what needs replacing.

The shelves are warm but the freezer is still frozen solid
This is the call we take more than any other, and the compressor is almost never the answer. One evaporator does the cooling for both compartments, a fan pushes that cold air forward, and a motorised damper decides how much of it arrives. Stop the fan or jam the damper and the freezer carries on at zero while the shelves above drift into the forties. We put a thermometer in each compartment and watch a full cycle before naming a part, because guessing here is how people end up buying a sealed system repair they never needed.
Ice building up across the back wall of the freezer
A frost free cabinet melts itself clear several times a day using a heater, a sensor and a board or timer that decides when. Take any one of those three out of the circuit and ice closes over the evaporator until air stops passing through it. Each leg gets metered separately. Replacing a whole assembly to solve a two dollar limit switch is not an invoice we want to hand anyone.
Water collecting under the salad drawers
The channel that carries meltwater to the tray over the compressor has either frozen shut or silted up, so the water comes forward into the cabinet instead. Clearing the tube fixes this week. Putting the drain clip back, the little metal strap that keeps the tube warm enough to stay open, is what stops it coming back every winter.
The motor runs all day and never switches off
Start at the condenser. Coastal air leaves salt on the fins, cooking leaves grease, and together they build a mat that traps exactly the heat the coil exists to shed. A cabinet in that state is chasing a temperature it can no longer reach. Hardened door seals and a sensor reading a few degrees low account for most of what is left.
A click, then a buzz, over and over
That is the start relay trying to bring the compressor up to speed and dropping out under load before it gets there. Worth knowing what it costs: the part is a very small fraction of a new refrigerator, and more sound cabinets are thrown away over this one component than over anything else we are called to.
The ice maker has stopped making ice
Three usual candidates: the water valve at the back, a fill tube that has frozen solid inside the door, or the ice maker head itself. Undercounter and built-in ice machines work on an entirely different principle and have their own page, because almost nothing that is true of a door ice maker applies to them.

My refrigerator is twelve years old. Am I throwing good money after bad?
The kind of cabinet matters far more than the number of years. Column and built-in refrigeration from Thermador, Liebherr, Viking, Monogram or JennAir is engineered for two decades, and a fan motor or a board on one of those costs a small fraction of replacing the appliance and reworking the joinery around it. A freestanding unit past twelve with a genuine sealed system leak sits at the opposite end. You get both numbers and you decide; we do not steer that conversation.
How long will somebody be in the house?
Half an hour to forty five minutes just to read the appliance, because temperatures and currents only mean something while it runs. After that, three visits in four finish there and then, because evaporator fans, sensors, defrost heaters, and water valves are already in the technician's inventory. Anything that has to be ordered comes back in a second slot at no extra labor charge.
Why does my coil need cleaning so much more often than my neighbour inland?
Salt does not evaporate. Within a mile or so of the water it settles onto the condenser and combines with ordinary cooking dust into a felt that holds heat precisely where the coil is trying to shed it. A compressor working against that ages faster than any manufacturer allowed for. In Manhattan Beach, Sunny Isles Beach or Aventura we suggest clearing it annually, and the difference that makes is counted in years of service rather than months.
